It is recommended to use a thermal joint compound to improve heat conduction from the case to the mounting surface since it helps to fill any gaps and improve the contact between the case and the mounting surface. However, if the mounting surface is still flat and clean and the controller does not overheat, then using a thermal joint compound is just optional.
