Yes, a main contactor is required for 36-volt applications. It is best to use a heavy-duty single-pole, single-throw (SPST) contactor with silver-alloy contacts, such as an Albright SW80 or SW180. It is also recommended that a 250-ohm, 5-watt resistor, such as the Curtis PMC p/n MP-2, be used across the contactor to reduce inrush current through the contacts.
